Baby Shrug and Booties

Here are some last-minute projects I finished for the baby before she arrived on the 18th. They're both a newborn size, but neither one fits Keira yet! She's a tiny gal, but will grow, so I hope to get a picture of her in them soon!
The shrug is from this pattern I found online and the booties are from an Annie's Attic crocheted booties booklet by Carolyn Christmas.

Hi,
I found your blog via google as I am stuck with the Beatrice shrug pattern that you made last year. I have made the body of the garment without a problem and the size has turned out ok too. What I cannot understand is the instructions for the tie around the bottom. I have tried 4 times now and always end up with variations of a blobby spider web! Any hints?
Thanks
Heather from downunder in New Zealand.

Hi Heather,
The tie is a trellis stitch pattern that does look a little blobby when being worked up. I don't think you're doing anything wrong with it, but finding a stitch dictionary picture of what the trellis stitch is supposed to look like may help you. Here is a picot trellis stitch that may help you. You could also try blocking it. I didn't, but made sure that I lined it up properly and pinned it before stitching it onto the shrug.
